Skiathos 2001
Skiathos is green, soft and idyllic and probably has more sandy beaches than any other Greek island. Ranging from tiny coves to long open expanses of sand, there are over 60 beaches. One of them, Lalaria, is among Greece's best. The island's town, Skiathos, rises from one of Greece's prettiest ports. Pine woods, orchards and million olive trees cover the hilly interior. Around Skiathos there are 9 smaller islands. Two of these, called Tsougries, lie across the main harbour offering safe anchorage to boats, with a small marina for yachts. In this holydays we spent a good time in a nice place.
About the sea what can we say... Simply marvellous. The beaches nearest town, such as Megali Ammos and Tzaneries, are extremely crowded and are probably the island's least attractive. Vromolimnos is less crowded, until 6 p.m., when happy hour begins and music pumps up: you have to go there and dance!
The main road ends at the famous beach of Koukounaries, a long sandy crescent stretching between low trees, one of the most beautiful bays in the world. The word koukounaries means "pine cones" in Greek. The beach is backed by a lovely lagoon, wheat fields and olive groves. The beach has clear, gradually deepening water. Jet-skis, motorboats, windsurfing and water-skiing are all available off the beach.
Near there you can find Banana and Little Banana: the first one is a very nice beach especially for young people, on Little Banana... eheh you will see many "anguri" as Greeks use to say! It is a nudist beach, but if you feel ok, it is worth visiting: wonderful.
I love to suggest also Mikro Asselinos, the most peaceful small beach on the island, and then Asselinos... You absolutely have to go there, maybe just to taste the best yogurt, fruits & honey salad in the universe, made with all the love the host has.
Not to forget about Mandraki: a long way on the motorbike on bad roads to find a huge and almost desolated beautiful esplanade.
One last word (we never finish to describe beautiful beaches... there are so many!): LALARIA. Lalaria is a magnificent beach made of white stones polished by the sea. Reachable only by boat is a must-go place in Skiathos.
TIPS
We rent apartaments at Villa Ourania: It was great... Nicos and Urania were very kind people: be sure, there you will feel good. And remember also they often organize nice barbecues. Rent a motorbike, you will be free to change completely different beaches twice a day. Spend one day getting a boat and making a tour of the island.
On the far western end of the port there are some of the most popular loud clubs. One of our favourites was Remezzo, noisy, sociable and funny. Other bars on the waterfront worth trying are Santé, Kahlua and the most discoteque-like BBC. But we're Italians and so... Before night clubbing... A quick (?) jump to our favourite nite corner: Briki Café, the temple of Espresso. Just go there and say YASSU to Alexandra, Zoe, Nathalie and all the nice girls working there: say them that we always remember those beautiful nights, they will understand. The last tip: learn a little bit of norwegian, it could be useful!

L'amore e la calma con cui quell'uomo preparava lo yogurt con la macedonia al baretto della spiaggia di Asselinos... Lo ricorderò per sempre.
